Stravinsky’s towering music represents the onset of the modern age. The story of «Le Sacre du printemps» is a simple one: in the spring, a young girl must dance herself to death as a sacrifice to appease the gods and assure their favour and rich harvests for the coming year. This ritual sacrifice is also the focal point of the choreography in Basel. Water alone brings the bare, cold scene to life, a symbol of cleansing, fertility and growth, but also of danger.
