«Rébus», an orchestral suite by the young Igor Markevitsch, was composed for the Ballets Russes and dedicated to ballet impresario Serge Diaghilev. Nevertheless, the suite received only a concertante performance in Paris in 1931; not until 1994 did Richard Wherlock design a stage performance. Wherlock follows the structure of the score to create a choreographic jigsaw, assembling and reassembling various combinations of dancers like puzzle pieces from scene to scene before a final, mysterious denouement of clarity.
